Eating REAL, unprocessed food is so important for our health but can be a real challenge for some.  We know breakfast is super important and a hearty breakfast to start your day off right is crucial!  So, thought I would share a few ways to change up your morning oatmeal.

First……….DITCH the packets.  You don’t need that premixed sugar, spice, and preservatives.  It’s simple and cheaper to make your own. All you need to do is buy old fashion rolled oats.  Or steel cut if you prefer.  Here are some ideas:


Start with 1/2 cup of dry oatmeal.  That is the recommended serving size (150 calories).  Place that in a microwave-safe bowl and add a pinch of salt.  To that add 1/2 cup of water and 1/2 cup of one of the following:

-Milk (1% or 2% preferably)
-Almond Milk (I prefer unsweetened vanilla)
-Apple juice or any berry juice (This is my new fav!   You don’t need any added sweetness like honey when cooking the oats in juice or cider)
Apple cider


Cook on high in the microwave for typically 2-3 minutes (follow the package instructions for cooking time).

When complete, add any combination of the following:

Fresh fruit (any berry or bananas)

Dried fruit

Sprinkle of cinnamon

Drizzle of honey

Any toasted nut or granola

And there you have it! A healthy unprocessed breakfast in just minutes! Enjoy!
